Jesus and Mary Chain 12" Automatic

I was already a HUGE fan of these guys before this came out in '89 and this album was a change in direction for the JAMC, sort of. I LOVE this album as much as their other stuff even though it was more........commercial, if that's possible for this band ? They had lost all that squealing feedback of the early stuff and let the songs speak for themselves, and they're great songs.

This has the singles Head On (covered by the Pixies at the time) and Blues from a Gun, but has so much more to offer. This is a great pop album by one of Britains best pop bands. I saw these guys live twice and they are amazing. I actually did some work for them last time they toured which was a dream come true. Tim.

Wire 12" Pink Flag

What can I say about this one ? What an album. Released in '77 it has 21 brilliant, abstract, fast songs that set the pace for what became known as "post punk" and has been a HUGE influence on so much since. Incredible album.

I bought this album second hand in the mid 80's as I knew 12XU from Minor Threat and knew the name Wire from reading interviews with EVERY punk band worth listening to. The length of the songs blew me away, and this is coming from a Ramones fan. They just start and finish and you go, "what happened there?" Awesome. Tim.

Snuff 12" Flibbiddydibbiddydob

I bought this album in about '91 after I got back from traveling. I'd heard of them in the UK but didn't see anything by them ? This is an album of covers from everyone from TV commercials and Chas and Dave to The Who and the Specials to GBH and Simon and Garfunkel. I LOVED this album when I got and played it to death.

I saw them live once and they were great. I went back and bought the first and third albums after this one, both of which are available for sale too. Tim.

The Meanies 12" The Meanie of Life

What a record ............... Man, I played this CD to death back in '93/94. I'm sure I really don't have to tell you about these guys. I loved the meanies so much and this was a kind of "best of" with such live classics as Darkside Of My Mind, Our New Planet, Big Bertha,  Mr Authority.......... the list goes ON and ON. What an album.

This is their classic album from 1993 released on vinyl for the very first time, ever. Deluxe gatefold sleeve, limited edition of 500 copies on 150 Gram.

D.O.A. - Let's Wreck The Party

Time to bone up on your D.O.A. ahead of the Canadian legends' recently announced Australian tour???
Let's Wreck The Party was D.O.A.'s fifth album, released in 1985 on Jello Biafra's Alternative Tentacles label. Like many punk bands in the mid 80's this one has slightly more metallic guitar tones and production than earlier efforts but D.O.A. sacrificed none of their wit.

Catch Joey Shithead and the boys when they play in Brisbane at the Prince of Wales in Nundah, Saturday 12th March with Mouthguard, Plan of Attack and Spitfire Lair.

This Are Two Tone 12" - Various Artists

A compilation from 1983 featuring a selection of tracks from the 2-Tone roster as chosen by the president Walt Jabsco. This came out many years before the third wave of ska from the U.S. made it such a dirty word. Long before your Reel Big Fishes and Goldfingers ruined everything, Madness, the Specials, The Selector and others took Jamaican ska and added some of punk's energy to classic results.

 

 

Highlights include Do Nothing, Ghost Town and 3 other Specials tracks, On My Radio by the Selecter, Rhoda Dakar's harrowing The Boiler and the complete lack of Bad Manners.

Stiff Little Fingers 12" Inflamable Material

I got this in my first wave of punk. It was loud, noisy and angry and I loved it. These boys from Northern Ireland were the opposite of the Undertones. I think this album did well for an independent release and it certainly influenced a lot of snotty punk bands to follow.

I got "Nobody's Heroes" and "Go For It" after this one but never followed them after that. I think they still play today ? This is an awesome punk album and should be in everyone's collection. Worth the admission price for "Suspect Device" alone. Tim

The Screaming Tribesmen 12" Date with a Vampire

Man, this record was BIG amongst my friends and made a huge impact on the Brisbane music scene back in '85. I seemed to cross the line with punk and goth. There's 4 crackin' songs on this EP that was produced by Chris Masuak who also played on the album. Murray Shepherd (Brads brother) was gone on drums by this stage and they had moved to Sydney but we still thought of them as Brisbane band.

The intro to the title songs still evokes memories of being young and going out to see bands in Brisbane somehow.Tim

Public Enemy 12" Fear of a Black Planet

This album is from around '90 and I remember hearing it for the first time and thinking that Chuck D had THE BEST Rap/Hip Hop voice ............ EVER. I still think that today. The songs on this album are amazing. The production was incredible. It sounded so much thicker and more "layered" than their second album. "911 is a joke" and "Burn Holywood Burn" are still great songs in any arena or genre today.

I saw them live a couple of times and always enjoyed them. They had dancing soldiers, made a great noise and had Flavor Flav with the giant clock around his neck. What more could you want ? Oh yeah , Chuck D and some great songs .......... Amazing band who had a massive influence on music after this album. Tim.

Husker Du - Eight Miles High 7"

Released in 1984, Husker Du have a crack at covering the Byrds' 'Eight Miles High'. While the original is a classic 60's pop song, this scribe prefers Husker Du's noisier take on it (no surprise there I guess).

The B-side 'Masochism World' is possibly even better. A live version of a song that would not long after appear on the 'Zen Arcade' LP. Like all the best Husker Du songs it's a perfect mix of noise, great lyrics, catchy pop hooks with just the right touch of punk aggression.
I can also say that I love the packaging on this one.

New Model Army 12" Vengence

I got this 12" in 1984. It was the first album by this Welsh (I think ?) band New Model Army and the song "Small Town England" was on, I think, a skate video we'd got from somewhere ? I looked up who sang it at the end and ordered the album. Of course I'd never heard of the band before but I loved this album and a few of the songs ended up as regulars on comp tapes when we'd go skating.

I got the next 4 albums I think until somewhere around '89/90 I lost interest in them. When I was in London in '90/91 I saw them play at a small pub where Napalm Death had played the week before. They were great and got me back into these albums. I bought this and the 3rd album on cassette to listen to while I travelled around. Tim.

Ratcat 12" Tingles

This came out in 1990 and to this day I still think That Ain't Bad is a great song. Ratcat had been playing around Sydney since the mid to late 80's with Simon Day on vocals and guitar and a never ending succession of bass players and drummers inc Nick Dalton from the Lemonheads at one stage. They were originally signed to Waterfront records. Tim.

What a spectacular ................

I went to U2 last night hoping to be converted in the same way other stadium bands have effected me in the past. Bands that I wasn't a big fan of like KISS (with Ace and Peter in full make up) that made me really appreciate that "the show" can make a difference. AC/DC, Metallica and the Foo Fighters can all entertain me for nearly 2 hours with songs I don't particularly like on record or the radio that seem to work in the environment of the stadium with all the lights and pyrotechnics.

 

U2 however were a total disappointment. I found the whole stadium show detracted from the show incredibly and I found myself watching the huge video screens and thinking "I may as well be at home watching this on TV" and then thinking I'd rather be watching the IT crowd or Peep Show. The monolith "set" did nothing to improve the show either, instead it actually hindered the 4 small humans trying to fight it for recognition. What were we there for ? The show or the set ?

 

The most exciting part of the show musically was when the 4 members of the band walked out to Space Oddity blaring through the massive PA and hit the stage just as the drum part comes in, and it's not even their song. The only other part that moved me musically is when Sunday Bloody Sunday started with the kick drum and military style snare and that signature early Edge echo Strat coming in over the top. Most of the remainder of the time I was just plain bored.

 

If the definition of a great band is a group of people who have honed their art down to the perfect (or as close to it) form that they can possibly achieve, then U2 are a great band. Nobody does U2 better than them, but what last night really made me realize is ........ they just don't have the songs to back it up and no amount of "show" will cover that. If that is the definition of a great band then surely the Clash in '81, the Beatles in '64, the Ramones in '77, Public Enemy in '89 and so on would have been more awe inspiring than "the claw" last night ?

 

It's a shame because I have a certain amount of respect for U2  as a band for not just re-releasing The Joshua Tree over and over again for the last 25 years, which they could have done and still been one of the biggest bands in history. They have constantly and consistently reinvented themselves on each album and at least tried to be inventive and change the formula, sometimes at the disgust of their fans. The problem last night was, the formula doesn't work. Maybe I just prefer my rock with a roof ?

The Pogues 12" Rum Sodomy and the Lash

Not everyone gets the Pogues, but if you don't you're wrong. It's that simple. Shane is one of THE GREATEST songwriters ........ ever. This is their first album from around '85 and it's everything great punk should be, and more. Like Billy Bragg, it's not what some consider to be "punk", whatever that is. The Irish folk turned some people off but it's much, much more than that. GREAT (and I mean GREAT) songs sung with conviction and feeling surrounded by instruments you wouldn't normally associate with punk.

This album has such classics as The Sick Bed of Cúchulainn, The Old Main Drag, A Pair of Brown Eyes, Sally MacLennane, Dirty Old Town, oh, it just goes on and on. What an album. In fact all the Pogues and Shane's solo stuff is worth getting. He's a true genius. Tim.

Undead Apes - Grave Consequences 12"

Best 12" released by a Brisbane band since Draft Dodger's 'First Past The Last Post'??? Buggered if I can't think of a better one right now so I'll say yes, it is. Eleven obnoxiously catchy songs by four people who have been in other great bands of note, but this completely stands on it's own. Infectious three + chord songs that somewhere between the Ramones and Weezer, with fantastic lyrics. I've been hanging for the release of this for months. Top picks - Taxes, Bitter and Hypothermia (this one even makes spelling fun!!!).

Another quality release from the Mere Noise lads who keep kicking goals. Also comes with a download code so you can whack it on your iPod and ignore that annoying shit talking on his phone next to you on the bus.

Olympic Sideburns 12"

I saw these guys support the Flamin Groovies back in '85 at East Leagues club and was blown away. Their raw punk/cowboy sound was very Gun Club but in Australian way like the Johnnys. In fact Spencer P Jones of the Johnnys was a member of the Olympic Sideburns for a short stint and one of the songs on this album was co-written by him.

Trash Talk - Eyes & Nines 12"

Pretty savage stuff here from this band out of Sacramento, California. I played with them last year on the Gold Coast and hadn't even really heard of them before we were asked to play. But the kids at the show knew every word, and from the first chord had the room in the palm of their hand. Brooding powerviolence-influenced hardcore that lurches from fast thrash to slow heavy sections, with amazingly tight sudden changes in tempo.

The new LP was produced by Joby Ford (guitarist from the Bronx) and mixed by Dave Schiffman (Bronx, Rollo Tomassi, Dead Meadow, Weezer), and does a pretty good job of capturing their live intensity.

Firehose 12" Sometimes (almost always)

Firehose came out of the ashes of the Minutemen after their lead singer D Boon was killed in a car accident. They formed in '86 and signed to SST and after playing just shy of 1000 gigs, broke up in '94. This EP was released in '88 and has, what to me was their best song, the title track, Sometimes (almost always) along with two other great Firehose songs. Tim.

Just flat-out awesome from start to finish. 'The Girl Who Lives on Heaven Hill' is noisy, catchy perfection! And while we're at it, the title track is the best song ever written with only one line of lyrics.

Hoodoo Gurus 12" Stoneage Romeos

I saw these guys play Tojo on Countdown in '83 and I instantly fell in love. At the time I was more into hardcore, but something about these guys in paisley with BIG hair really struck a nerve. This album came out in '84 and I lived in a Stoneage Romeos T shirt for the next year and have seen them so many times over the years. I played this album a million times. I knew every sound and inflection in Dave's voice. This is STILL one of THE GREATEST Australian albums ever recorded. The sheer pop naivety while sounding very complex and "original" but still sounding like everything you already loved is amazing.

The first song "Let's all Turn On" says it all. It's a list of everyone they (and you should) love. The singles were amazing, but so were the other songs too. Leilani was re-recorded and it had Tojo, I Want You Back and My Girl as singles. The other true gems are the surprise other songs like Dig It Up (shows Dave's love of the Cramps), Death Ship, In the Echo Chamber (about Get Smart) and Aurthur (about their "first" bass player) This is a cracker from start to finish. This is the new album from long running New York band the Swans. Well they did breakup for a fair while but they're back. As one of my friends pointed out the other day, all the Swans albums are different and you never exactly know what to expect from a new album. Without giving away any surprises I can reveal that 'My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky' is a great addition to their body of work. For the record, my personal favourite is 'The Great Annihilator'.

Buzzcocks 12". Another Music in a Different Kitchen

This was the first album by the mighty Buzzcocks from Manchester. It kicks off with Fast Cars, straight into No Reply. Man , what a start to a first record.

This album also has I don't Mind, Autonomy, Oh Shit and Orgasm Addict and ........ and ........ What an album. These guys were lumped in with the punks but they were POP and great at it. They had frantic, abrasive guitars and fast songs, but they were SO catchy it was silly. I saw these guys a few times live and their set list is just hit after hit after hit. Amazing.

Hits - Living With You Is Killing Me 12"/CD + Split 7" with Dimi Dero Inc.

 

This album from local garage rockers Hits is a killer! Anyone who's ever seen them live knows they're a great band, just the right amount of loose for this style (without being a sloppy mess). The same can't always be said for vocalist Richie. But that is all part of their charm. This album packs in nine of their rollicking Hits (sorry, couldn't help myself) and a Lee Hazlewood cover. Another great release from local label Mere Noise.

DEVO 12" Freedom of Choice

DEVO ........... what else can you say ? What a band and what an album this is. This was their third album from 1980 and for me, it was the perfect storm for what was, is and will always be DEVO.

Only saw them once live and Cathy and I bought an "official" energy dome that was the biggest piece of plastic crap I've ever paid good money for, but didn't care. This album has such gems as Freedom of Choice, Whip It and Girl U Want plus the fantastic Gates of Steel, Ton o' Luv and much, much MORE. This is "the new wave" at it's best.
